The juniors finally got out on Saturday the 28th of June for their first monthly competition of the year, after having been delayed up to now with a combination of work on the club boat and unsuitable weather. It was a grey, damp typical Lewis summer day....but sea conditions were fine with a light northeasterly wind and a wee bit of a swell the further out we went from Carloway.
First drop was for mackerel and instantly the boys were into plenty of mogs and also a few nice herring in amongst them....just right for a fry! After bagging up on their bait we headed out to our usual haddie mark which is clean ground in 30 fathoms of water. Straight away they were into fish with haddies, big whiting, red gurnard, cod, coalies allcoming aboard, with mackerel baits being hit as soon as they touched bottom, with the sounder showing good marks of fish tight along the bottom! Though the swell wasn't bad, it proved too much for some of the juniors, so we took a decision about 11 am to head to the West Loch and fish for lythe around Berisay and the Old Hill.
Initially it was nice and calm in there and there was good numbers of lythe to 5lbs coming aboard steadily, but then the wind moved round to the southwest and increased, and with conditions becoming miserable, we pulled the plug at 2 pm and headed for home. Star of the day was young John Mackenzie on his first ever trip who won the competition with 23 fish, 8 species, and 154 points! In second place was Bryan Macleod, on his first trip also on the Sysac, with 16 fish, 6 species and 92 points, and Mark Macpherson third on 14 fish, 5 species and 85 points.
