With the club boat finally now over in Carloway after its maintenance work, and the good weather we have been having, the club had its first competition of the year on Saturday. Eleven anglers onboard enjoyed a lovely sunny day at sea with a good few fish coming in. The winner on the day was CJ Buchanan with 180 points, with John Nicolson in second place on 155 points for 86.33%.
The day started of with us getting Mackerel for bait, where a few Herring came in also then we headed out to try for Haddock. Almost straight away the Haddies and Whiting were coming aboard, and also a number of Megrim shown up during the day (more from that area in one day than I have seen in many years). The same mark was fished most of the day, where Haddies and Whiting were mainly coming in most of the day with a good variety of other species showing up also. Funnily enough though, it was after midday though before any in size Cod came aboard, and as the rest of the day went on there was the odd one or two coming in now and again. For the last hour it was decided to go and fish some hard ground in shallower water, it was hoped some Lythe (Pollack) would come aboard, but only just over half a dozen or so came aboard along with a few Cod and Ling.
Angie Mopp gave John Nicolson crabs.. John had a nice Cod of around 5-6 lbs at the end of the day over the shallower hard ground mark, and other fish of note caught during the day were a nice Ling for Donnie Maciver, and a nice Megrim for Donnie Morrison.
A enjoyable day out fishing, with a pretty mixed bag quality wise of Haddock and Whiting, with all the other species you would expect to catch thrown in.

Haddock, Whiting, Cod, Ling, Coalfish, Pollack, Mackerel, Herring, Dab, Plaice, Megrim, Cuckoo Wrasse, Grey Gurnard, Red Gurnard, Sprudog and Poor Cod
