SYSAC II Trip round from Stornoway to Carloway

Butt of Lewis Haddies
Butt of Lewis Haddies

The Club Boat (the SYSAC 2) made the journey round from Stornoway to Carloway yesterday, on the way we stopped of at one or two marks to try and get a few fish. On the way we stopped at Tolsta Head to get some Mackerel there were none around though, but Robert Macaulay did bring in a Dab whilst jigging the feathers.

With the farmer going on about plenty of Haddock the day before, we stopped of at the mark he fished at, and immediately we were into fish. The first fish to come aboard though was not a Haddock, instead was a surprise Megrim for Ivor Two Megs Macleod. Seconds later though the Haddock started coming in, and there was plenty of them, good ones up to around 4 lb, everyones rods were bend over and into Haddock. As the morning went on the fishing was not frantic, but there was always a few fish coming aboard to someone.

As the tide changed though, the Haddock really came on the feed . and everybody was taking in 2-3 nice Haddies a time, and within one drift it seemed like everyone had more than enough of them.

Other species coming in were Cod, Ling, Red Gurnard, Grey Gurnard, Coalfish, Megrim, Dab, Mackerel and Whiting . oh, and plenty of Octopus. Bait wise, it didnt really matter what you used onboard was Mackerel, Herring, Squid and Mussel, and all three baits were working as well as the other, with the Haddock in such a feeding frenzy it didnt matter what was presented to them to eat.

We stopped of at another mark on the way down towards Carloway, and yet again Ivor did it again, and brought in a Megrim straight away. this mark though didnt fish as well as it was hoped, with just a few Haddock and Whiting coming aboard.

A lovely sunny day at sea, with some patches of thick fog with the boat now in Carloway, hopefully we can all look forward to a good seasons fishing.
